So You Failed?…So What!!
This is not only a great quote, but it also gave me the inspiration for my post for Jacinta and Steve’s Blog Post 100 Comments Challenge. Whenever things in my life and business don’t seem to be going to plan, it always gives me the encouragement I need to never give up trying.
We should not be afraid to fail, in fact we must use it as a stepping stone to success. Why not use failure as a positive, an advantage if you like? I’m sure we’ve all experience failures from time to time…I know I’ve had my fair share. The important thing is how we react to them.
It is very unusual to find an entrepreneurial success story that doesn’t include some significant failure or adversity in it. I think that in order to achieve success, failure is a requirement…so let’s not be scared of it!
I have found this mindset to be especially helpful in my internet business, because it is so easy to get dispirited when confusion reigns and to give up when progress and success seems to be a long way off.
At times it can seem as though everything you try just fails to bring positive results. When this happens to me, it seems as though I have had more than my share of the “10,000 ways that won’t work”, but then this just makes me more determined to succeed.
I guess the real purpose of my post is to encourage all of us never to give up and to use what may be perceived as failures in our lives as the inspiration to spur us on to new heights of achievement.
Whilst most of us won’t end up inventing something as momentous as the light bulb, we can take encouragement from the fact that one of the most famous people on the planet had his fair share of failures!
May all your failures lead to success.
Brian

Hi Brian,
I believe that All Failures in life are actually Blessing In Disguise. How it works is different with each individual experience we had.
At times, failures make us stronger and wiser the next time round.
At times, it simply reflect some limits in us where we need to overcome or accept.
Our failures may close a “wrong path” we are taking even though it look right on the outside
Our failures force us to face the issues we had been avoiding, and open new doors and opportunities for us to pursuit our true calling in life.
I once came across a very good phrase using failures on the title of my friend’s Joe Fizz. He said he “Fails Forward” again. Meaning each time he come across a hurdles, he will learn something that put him a step forward to the goals he want to achieve.
Simple and powerful 2 word phrase about Failure, don’t you think?
Just my 2 cent, inspired from this post you wrote here.
Thanks for sharing.

Hey Brian, Excellent post, short and to the point. I think you have raised an important point. As Entrepreneurs there will be times when things dont go to plan. For myself I have just lost 50k on a network marketing business. For me this is a hard leeson to learn but its not an excuse to give up trying other ventures. Some people would laugh at my loss, and those people are not important to me.
We have to keep trying new ideas.
Thank you for the reminder about not giving up.

Hi Brian,
Other than being a great post – it also gives me a chuckle….lol
I get quite a few people telling me how lucky I am to have the lifestyle I do and make enough to pay my bills without the usual ‘job’ and all the daily grind that involves…
But most seem to forget my bankruptcy back in 2006 that left me with nothing… even my home had to be sold and proceeds given to the liquidator, along with my merc and gold rolex!
But hey – if that hadn’t happened I might still have been doing 12 hour days and making less than my employees…lol
(while dabbling in the internet part time still)
So yeah – sometimes failure does teach us lessons…. And sometimes it presents us with opportunities as well

Hi Brian,
It truly is survival of the fittest…and those who want it the most are simply the ones who get it.
Our resolve is what carries us through those times when it seems nothing is going right. Yet, those are the times we are learning the most.
Without those seeming “mistakes” we’ve lost our opportunities for growth….
Thanks for the inspiring words Brian…you can never hear these too many times as we are creatures of habit and most of us have a habit of thinking negatively.

Hi Brian
This is a great post and actually very timely for me. I have been a casual seller on eBay for almost 9 years with very few problems – until this past month or so. In the past four or five weeks I have had more things go wrong than in all the rest of the 9 years put together! I’ve had two non-paying bidders, two parcels returned undelivered in spite of being correctly addressed (that’s never happened before), a parcel to Austria gone missing (the first parcel I’ve ever had go astray) and I had a ‘senior moment’ and sent the wrong item to the wrong buyer – oops! And it’s not like I’ve been selling very much – considering what I’ve sold over that month or so, the failure rate must be well over 50% whereas in the past, probably 99.9% of my auctions that have ended with a sale have been completed without a hitch. If I was superstitious I’d say I’d been jinxed!
I can honestly say that if all these things had happened within such a short period of time when I first started on eBay, I would have assumed that it would always be that way and would have given up. But in reality, of course, I’ve just hit a rough patch and everything will be running smoothly again soon – I hope!!
Wishing you every success and few failures

Hi Brian,
Failure is not an option! Actually it isn’t a word in my language as far as I am concerned anymore.
Like most I have had my fair share of failures so to speak , however when you really think about things, they were not failures. They were lessons and events that needed to happen to become a better person and learn what I need to learn.
I went to an Anthony Robbins seminar many years ago and learned the term “CANEI”=”Constant And Never Ending Improvement”.
I live according to this as well as “Where there is a will there is a way”
Great post for the challenge. I hope everything is going well for the challenge. I will be back in a couple of days to check how the comments are going.
See you back here soon!
Cheers

Hi Brian
Blog posts like these should be written more frequently, I feel. Especially in internet marketing we do work all by ourselves – though we have forums and internet buddies. But initially definitely alone. This is where the negativity some times seeps in and we have a low feeling or feeling of not doing it right or feeling of failure … (would like to say that we do sometimes are afraid of success as well)
But then one of the reasons why folks in internet marketing do give-up so fast is because they had come in to make quick money – probably seen some guru or product selling at earn xxx thousand per week kind of thing. We need to look at it like education and like business ….
Did we become a graduate in a year – no it take 15+ years.
Can we built up and run a successful business in a few months – no.
Can we start an offline business like a franchise without money – no.
I think, we need to take the IM business as a business and not just try it out as a lottery. We need to invest time to study and money to get the tools of the trade (though quite a few are available for free – this is the only business that has this advantage) ..
So it’s a change in the mindset of people … hope I’ve not gone off track .. but thats what comes to my mind anyway after reading the post.
Cheers!

Abizer, Thank you for the visit and for your excellent in-depth comment.
You are correct, it is so easy to succumb to the feelings of being on your own in internet marketing. I think we all need support and encouragement from time to time.
I hope my post provided it. Keep up the great achievements you are making.
Great to meet you on this challenge.

Hi Brian
If you quit, you ended the game. Done, period. LL Bean had all 100 of their first product, sewn rubber and leather boots returned due to failure, but it gave them the seed money to make a second product and keep going. And, they honored their warranty. I keep looking under rocks and find a new thing, like something to improve my site’s hypothetical ranking. All stuff I never would have known about. It’s partly another man’s game, but hopefully we can work together. This challenge has taught me a lot. Many things I never heard of or understood the value of. I’ll integrate what I can as I can get to it. Thanks for the encouragement.

Brian – this is such a great reminder for people trying to achieve any goal that there will be some bumps along the way and you only fail when you quit. I think one of the most famous failures is the glue that a company tried to make which only allowed for temporary stickiness…. and the Post-it note was born!

Hi Brian,
Ah failure. That word we all hate, yet without it we would never evolve.
I look at my failures as hurdles in front of me, some are small, so I only have to jump a little, some are a lot bigger, I have to learn to jump higher.
Once you learn to jump, you can pass the hurdles with ease.

Hello Brian,
I actually had a big massive failure in my last online business, and wrote an apology on my blog about it.
Funny thing is, most people commented that I wasn’t a failure, because I refused to give up and came back to try again.
I beleive that failure made me stronger and taught me very valuable lessons about not having all my eggs in one basket and also not building a business on flimsy foundations.
So long as we learn from our mistakes I think it’s ok to make them, we are only human after all.

Hi Brian,
What an excellent and inspirational post!
I really like Thomas Edison’s quote.
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
So do I. “I have not failed online. I’ve just found 10,000 ways to make money online that simply don’t work!”
LOL
I spent a lot of money and also a lot of my personal time before I started making any income online.
I could quit years ago but thankfully I didn’t! Am I making mistakes today? Of course I am! We fail everyday. None can get something correctly from the first try.
If you ask any successful internet marketer today, they will tell you that they have failed SEVERAL times before they finally succeeded. If you DON’T FAIL you will NEVER SUCCEED! Because by failing you are learning from your mistakes and know from first hand how all this internet marketing stuff works!
Of course you don’t have to reinvest the wheel and find something unique online in order to succeed. Most newbies think that they have to find the Next Big Idea and build the next, YouTube, Facebook website to make money online. This is further from truth. You have to follow something exactly which that works today. If you accidentally follow the wrong path you just go back and continue on the correct road.
Take care,
Andreas

This is an awesome post! Everyone starting a business, whether online or offline should read this. Heck, as a matter of fact this can apply to any area of our lives, not just business.
My son just did a 4th grade sciende project on Thomas Edison. We actually talked about this quote and what it means and how it can be applied to his life.
Today it seems that people tend to give up on what they are doing and themselves like no other time in history. What does that say for our future?
I have been taught that when you get knocked down, you get back up again. How many times have I heard motivational speakers say, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade”? You have to make the best of what you have and move forward.
If you take action and fail, at least you are moving forward and not standing still.
Good luck to you!

Hey Brian,
I have thought of this many times. I have thought of giving up with this crazy internet marketing thing, but I never do. I always keep going, keep trying something else.
Maybe that’s part of my problem I guess. I try too many things at once and never stick with one thing long enought o tmake it work. You know what though. I’m never, ever going to quit no matter what. I know I’ll figure this all out sooner or later. (hopefully sooner)
Conceive, Believe, Achieve.

Hi Brian,
I agree. Failure is a key part of success… how can we really enjoy the fruits of our labor if we don’t remember the struggles and the hardships that led us there? I agree that failure is just a roadblock to our destination. it is not the destination unless we refuse to get up. I love your post. We all need these reminders.
Thank you!

‘May all failures lead to success’
That has got to be my new favorite quote. There’s just some ring to it that I can’t pinpoint but it makes sense. I know for one that I no longer look at failure as a barrier, instead I’ve conditioned myself to be numb to it and reverse it into something better – persistence. I guess the switch was a good choice because I haven’t failed since.
Thanks for sharing this with us Brian. I’ll see you beyond the 100th comment!

Success is often the temporary absence of failure. When we make mistakes we adjust what we do in order to avoid the same mistakes. Sometimes circumstances change on us and our new way of doing things leads to another mistake. No problem, adjust again and success is never too far away.
I may not invent the light bulb but mistakes have certainly helped shed light on many opportunities that I would not otherwise have seen.

Hi Brian,
This is a very thought provoking post.
Mindset and attitude is so important in this or any other business.
I quite like “”Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.”
I think it was CS Lewis that came out with that gem which sums it up nicely.
We will all get knocked back frequently in this business – it seems to be a given.
It is all about getting up again and keep moving forward.

Great quote and post which is all too true. If you read the stories of many of the most successful and wealthy people one common theme is that they have all overcome a number of failures along their path (be it bankruptcy, failed ventures or misdirected enterprise). Its just these don’t get as much publicity mainly because they don’t dwell on them, the lessons are learnt and they move on and ultimately succeed.
Certainly a lesson to us all, the key I find is first taking action then learning from the mistakes that are made and improving from there…. we will get there in the end!!
